Trendy Meets Retro

I absolutely adore stepping back in time and pulling off a retro look.

Since I am a history buff,  I’m often inspired by yesterday’s fashion trends noting pivotal periods throughout history. This ensemble was inspired by the old downtown hustle.

I am far from a city girl although I maneuver well now since moving to Atlanta many years ago. Nonetheless, being downtown Atlanta always seem so nostalgic.

While experimenting with hair lately, I stumbled upon an afro.

Growing up, I remember my uncles wearing stacked platform shoes, bellbottom suits and big afro’s. Add that to memories of weekend trips to the city with my parents, and this look was inevitable.

Downtown was where my mother shopped for her Sunday hats, tights and fru-fru dresses for the girls and bow ties for my brothers. Unlike today, it was the only place that made sense to shop for the latest fashions. The old buildings, crowded streets and passing characters all added to the shopping experience.

Keeping current with the trends of our modern world is expected, but you can take your look to another level keeping an eye out for unique and unexpected pieces to add to your trendy picks.

I have never been known to just blend in with the crowd so I often flock to color. Combine that with my knack for old things, and it all aids in carving out my unique fashion palette.

So get out of your comfort zone and shop where you wouldn’t normally shop. That could mean driving 45 min to the next town that has a slightly different vibe than what you are accustomed to. It could also mean planning a holiday to Paris, London (my fav) or other parts of the world and while touring, shop for unique pieces that are uncommon where you live.

And by all means, don’t forget to visit antique markets and thrift stores (more about that in another post).

Think about what inspires you in general to be the unique person that you are and let that flow through your wardrobe in a appealing sense. And most of all have fun doing it.
